On China’s decision not to return ambassadors

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs regrets the decision of the People‘s Republic of China not to return ambassadors and change the level of the diplomatic relations between Lithuania and China to that of charge d’affaires.

Lithuania reaffirms its adherence to the “One China” policy, but at the same time has the right to expand cooperation with Taiwan and to receive and establish non-diplomatic representations for ensuring the practical development of such ties, the way many other countries do. The receipt of the Taiwanese Representative Office in Lithuania is based on economic interests.

China recalled its Ambassador from Vilnius in August; the Lithuanian Ambassador returned from Beijing for consultations on 4 September.
