NATO is sending a Counter Hybrid Support Team to Lithuania
On 25 August, Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielius Landsbergis participated via video-conference in the meeting of the North Atlantic Council where a decision was made to send a NATO Counter Hybrid Support Team to Lithuania.
Lithuania submitted an official request to activate a NATO Support Team after it had experienced Aliaksandr Lukashenka regime’s hybrid attack, i.e. orchestrated irregular migrant flows from third countries by employing disinformation, propaganda and political blackmail.
“Let us be frank, the situation that Lithuania faces is not a migration crisis. It is Lukashenka’s well organised, cynically orchestrated hybrid operation, his vengeance in retaliation for Lithuania’s principled support to Belarusians in their fight for a democratic future of their country,” Mr Minister said when he addressed ambassadors to NATO. Gabrielius Landsbergis also expressed his gratitude to Allies for political support, solidarity and practical assistance in managing unprecedented migrant flows across the Belarus border.
A NATO Counter Hybrid Support Team is expected to arrive in Lithuania in the near future. NATO experts will analyse possible hybrid campaign scenarios, existing and potential risks and will offer advice on strategic communication and how to prepare for probable incidents.
Over four thousand people have illegally crossed the Belarus border to Lithuania in recent months.
