On February 28, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania summoned the chargé d’affaires ad interim of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Vilnius, Alexander Elkin, to protest over an interview given to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti on February 27. The official was warned and reprimanded for his untruthful statements about the reasons for the current state of affairs in bilateral relations, the Kaliningrad transit modalities and the rights of Russian citizens.

During the conversation, Lithuanian diplomats stressed that the bilateral relationship between Lithuania and Russia had deteriorated dramatically due to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and war crimes against Ukrainian civilians and soldiers.

Russia’s chargé d’affaires ad interim Elkin was reminded that the Migration Department under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania used its competence to act within the framework of national laws and enjoyed the right to revoke residence permits for aliens in Lithuania validly. Persons who disagree with the decisions of the Migration Department may appeal against them to the courts of the Republic of Lithuania.

According to Lithuanian diplomats, Lithuania complies with its commitments and ensures the transit of persons through Lithuanian territory. The control of the carriage of goods through the territory of Lithuania shall be carried out in accordance with the EU and national laws. Russia’s chargé d’affaires ad interim has been strongly warned that Lithuania should take additional countermeasures if false and misleading statements were to be repeated.
