Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis to visit the South Caucasus on behalf of the EU High Representative
On 24-26 June, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis, together with his Austrian counterpart Alexander Schallenberg and the Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu, will visit the South Caucasus, as mandated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.
The visit of the three EU Foreign Ministers to Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia was agreed upon at an informal meeting of EU Foreign Affairs Ministers (Gymnich) in Lisbon on 27 May, which, among other things, focused on frozen conflicts in the EU’s eastern neighbours.
“I am glad that Lithuania's call for greater geopolitical attention to the South Caucasus has been heard. We know this region well and we understand just how important it is for the countries of this region to receive the EU's support for their security and stability. We wish to make it very clear: Europe is and will only be even more active in the South Caucasus. Lithuania, together with other EU countries, is determined to contribute fully to this cause, also by exploiting the opportunities that the Eastern Partnership offers," said Landsbergis ahead of the visit.
On 25 June, Landsbergis, Schallenberg and Aurescu will meet with the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia in their capitals. On 26 June, the Foreign Ministers will be received by the Georgian leadership in Tbilisi.
