Lithuania contributes to the international community's humanitarian effort to help the most disadvantaged

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania decided to provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine, the people of Afghanistan and Venezuelan refugees in view of the deteriorating humanitarian and political situation in these countries. The money will be transferred to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Lithuania will allocate EUR 100, 000 for humanitarian aid in Ukraine, EUR 100, 000 to help the people of Afghanistan, and EUR 50, 000 to help the Venezuelan refugees in Latin America.

Since Russian aggression against Ukraine started in 2014, around 1.5 million people have fled the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine. In addition, more than 3.1 million Ukrainians live in the areas not controlled by the Government in the east of the country.

Afghanistan is experiencing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. The deteriorating situation in Afghanistan continues to worsen due to the long-standing armed conflict, political instability,  natural disasters, climate change, food insecurity, poverty, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Venezuela is also facing a severe humanitarian emergency. Some 5.4 million Venezuelans have fled the country since 2015. The influx of refugees and migrants, and the COVID-19 pandemic have had an impact on the political, economic and social development of the host countries in Latin America.

The International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Organization for Migration deliver humanitarian assistance, provide medical help to people affected by the crisis and work to rebuild critical infrastructure.

Lithuania's development cooperation is an integral part of its foreign policy. Our motto is “The world’s problems have no borders. Only by contributing to their solution can we make a better, safer world for us all.”
