Artist Jurgis Didžiulis to serve as the new Honorary Consul of Colombia in Lithuania
On 28 November in Vilnius, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Darius Skusevičius presented the exequatur to the producer, songwriter, performer and public figure Jurgis Didžiulis, enabling him to carry out the duties of the Honorary Consul of Colombia in Lithuania. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius signed the exequatur, taking into account the decision by the President of Colombia and the head of diplomacy.
Skusevičius welcomed the intensifying relations between Lithuania and Colombia – more often visits, intensifying business ties, and the event that took place in October in Vilnius to present topical issues related to Colombia.
“In addition to business and political ties, it is very important to foster people-to-people contacts. Thus, we wish Lithuanians and Colombians to get to know each other better,” said Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister. In the meeting, the officials also noted that Lithuania was trying to maintain a close relationship with the Lithuanian community in Colombia. The local Lithuanian community was established in the post-war years. The attention was paid to the growing Colombian community in Lithuania.
Didžiulis emphasized that he was both Colombian and Lithuanian, and held two passports – Colombian and Lithuanian. “A good understanding of the two cultures allows me to easier see more opportunities for cooperation and bring both nations closer together. Until now I have served as an informal Colombian cultural attaché - we organized Colombian street events, we created the song ‘Like’ („Patinka“) celebrating the rhythms of Colombia, and now I will be able to do this officially with the entire Colombian community in Lithuania,” said Didžiulis, who also initiated and launched the ‘ToBeLT’ project to foster the unity of Lithuania.
Currently, 49 Honorary Consuls represent foreign countries in Lithuania, while 212 Honorary Consuls represent Lithuania abroad.
