Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Regarding the Criminal Trial on the Case of Downing of Flight MH17
Lithuania welcomes the start of the criminal trial on the 9th of March against the four suspects, who are facing criminal charges in the downing of Flight MH17 over the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine.
The downing of Flight MH17 on 17 July 2014 claimed the lives of 298 victims, therefore the start of criminal trial is to be considered as an important milestone towards finding the truth and establishing justice for the victims, their next of kin as well as holding those responsible for the downing of Flight MH17 to account.
We express full confidence in the independence and professionalism of the legal procedures that are going to take place before a Dutch court, under Dutch law, while trying 4 suspects in absentia for their alleged direct roles in the attack of Flight MH17.
As the criminal investigation of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) continues, we call upon the Russian Federation to assume responsibility and to cooperate fully with the investigation, in accordance with UNSC Resolution 2166.
