On 8 April OPCW IIT has publishded its first report on the responsibility of the use of chemical weapons in Syria in March 2017. The collected factual evidence gives sufficient grounds to believe that the responsible individuals belong to the Syrian Arab Republic Air Force. Shortly this report will be considered by the OPCW Executive Council and later by the United Nations.
Lithuania fully supports comprehensive and impartial work of IIT in preparing the report, as well as its findings. Lituania strongly condemns the use of chemical weapons in any context. Those responsible for the use of chemical weapons must be kept accountable. An IIT report is a very important step in this direction.
By taking joint and decisive action we will prevent tragedies caused by the use of chemical weapons from recurring. The use of chemical weapons by anyone is a violation of international law and can amount to the most serious of international crimes - war crimes and crimes against humanity.
In Decemer 2019 Lithuania was elected to the OPCW Executive Council for a two year term, starting from 12 May, 2020.
