Lithuania follows events in Moldova with concern, as the country is presently facing a difficult crisis, said the Minister L. Linkevičius in the Foreign Affairs Council on 17 June in Luxembourg. The Lithuanian Foreign Minister stressed the important role of political dialogue in the peaceful transition of power.
According to L. Linkevičius, the citizens of Moldova have expressed their will in the parliamentary elections. It must be entirely and fully respected, and enforced in accordance with the principles of democracy and the rule of law, enabling the legitimate Government to fulfill its obligations unhindered.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister briefed his counterparts on conversations with Moldova's new Prime Minister Maia Sandu and the United States Ambassador Philip T. Reeker, Acting Assistant Secretary of European and Eurasian Affairs.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister urged the EU to closely coordinate action among the EU member states and with the U.S. “We cannot remain indifferent to the future of an associated country – Moldova. The EU needs to play an active role in ensuring a peaceful transition of power to the legitimate Government. At the same time, it is important to ensure that external actors seeking to undermine Moldova's interests and European prospects do not take advantage of the crisis,” said L. Linkevičius.
