Foreign Ministry’s Statement on Investigation into the Downing of Flight MH17

Recalling the downing of flight MH17 six years ago, Lithuania expresses solidarity with families of the victims and supports their and the Dutch government’s efforts to seek recognition of Russia’s responsibility for the tragedy before the European Court of Human Rights, as well as the trial of four suspects opened in the Netherlands earlier this year. Those repsonsible for the tragedy must be brought to justice.
Lithuania calls upon the Russian Federation to finally accept the findings of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) about its role in the downing of MH17 and to cooperate unconditionally with JIT and the Netherland’s court as forseen in the UN Security Council Resolutin 2166.
Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was shot down on 17 July 2014 while flying over temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine by a Buk missile originating from the Russia‘ 53rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade based in the city of Kursk. All 298 people on board were killed.
