On 4 September, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Dalius Čekuolis met with the new Ambassador of Finland Arja Inkeri Makkonen, who presented her letters of credence to the President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda on the same day.

The meeting with the Ambassador of Finland discussed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the region and the latest measures taken by some countries in view of the outbreak in the region. The Foreign Vice-Minister Čekuolis shared his insights into the perspectives of the Nordic-Baltic Eight cooperation, as well as of other regional cooperation formats.

The new Ambassador to Lithuania noted that Finland would chair the Nordic-Baltic Eight cooperation in 2021 and hoped that this would give added impetus to Finland and Lithuania’s joint activities within the format. The participants of the meeting also discussed the situation in Belarus and other security challenges in the Baltic Sea region. The diplomats of the two countries noted the importance of maintaining the unified position of the European Union on Belarus.

Arja Inkeri Makkonen replaced Christer Michelsson, who has served as Finland’s Ambassador to Lithuania since 2016.
