At Red Cross Conference, Lithuania expresses support to humanitarian action
On December 9-12, at the 33rd International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent in Geneva Lithuania reiterated its support for the activities of the movement and announced its contribution to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) activities in Ukraine.
In his statement, Lithuanian Permanent Representative Ambassador Andrius Krivas reaffirmed Lithuania’s solid commitment to, and full respect for, International Humanitarian Law as well as support to the noble objectives and principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement that guide humanitarian action worldwide.
„In 2019 the Lithuanian Red Cross Society marks its 100th anniversary. It is now the oldest and renowned NGO in Lithuania whose contribution to the humanitarian assistance is very much needed and appreciated“.
The Permanent Representative also informed about Lithuania's decision to allocate 100 thousand euros to the ICRC humanitarian assistance activities in Ukraine. In May this year Lithuania‘s Government designated 100 000 euros for the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) humanitarian assistance to the people in Venezuela.
Ambassador Krivas also stressed the importance of the International Humanitarian Fact Finding Commission, encouraged other countries to recognize its competence and to make a better use of its capabilities.
International Conferences of the Red Cross and Red Crescent take place every four years and discuss current challenges to the International Humanitarian Law and humanitarian assistance. Several resolutions, aiming at better implementation of the Geneva Conventions, are adopted during the Conference. The delegates also elect the Standing Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement. This year, together with the leadership of the Lithuanian Red Cross Society, representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and National Defence take part in the Conference.
